What other distros have been tried?

We're working on compiling a list of how well other Linux distros run on the Zonbu hardware. Since we lack the resources to throughly test other distros, we're turning to you. Any information you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

What other distros have you tried on the Zonbu, and how well have they worked?

Has anyone tried XPe (Windows XP Embedded) on the Zonbu?
Note that it's very different from XP (Pro)!

I got Fedora 7 and 8 test2 running on the hardware. Aside missing the OpenChrome driver everything seems fine.

Arch Linux worked save for the graphics driver (the open source Xorg 'via' driver didn't work so I gave up - lame, I know, but I was just quickly testing it out using my 'larch' LiveUSB version ie. not the full blown Arch install). I also ran 'lspci' and noticed that the kernel hadn't recognised the GPU. I can't remember the kernel version but I'm pretty sure it was after 2.6.17.

Puppy Linux 2.16 booted without a problem. It even saw fit to use the 'vesa' graphics driver.

As both distros had graphics problems, it would be useful if someone could (please) tell me the name and path of Zonbu's graphics/Xorg kernel module so I could copy it these other distros and try it out. Also, while we're at it, where is the kernel config file located (I haven't looked for either of these so far so I don't know if they're there).

Puppy 2.17 ran fine for me but needs audio and video drivers.

Ubuntu ran fine from a live cd but also needs audio and video drivers.

There are a few solutions for both drivers on Ubuntu but I have read there are mixed results, especially if you upgrade Ubuntu after making the changes.
The upcoming release may solve that.

Have not found any solutions for Puppy.
The drivers are available on the via website and the openchrome project if anyone is proficient enough to make them work.

I would think that Debian and/or most of the Debian based distros would run fine.

Ubuntu or Xubuntu Fiesty works great with alsa and kernel from the Gutsy repo as described in another thread here. I haven't attempted a wireless setup though.

I've installed Ubuntu 7.04 onto a new 4GB CF card, and it went smoothly, no problems at all. I then installed Automatix to get the media-playing stuff sorted out, and then tried the result. Video was fine but - no sound whatsoever! :-(

I'd love to know how to get the sound working with Ubuntu. I might try the latest version to see if that fares any better.

I used "Damn Small Linux" that I started via PXE booting (yes, you can do that with the Zonbu box. You just have to enable that in the bios settings.)

The sound did not work and I did not try to configure it.

The zonbu os replaced DSL in our living room.

I'd be interested in trying others.. but first I'd be interested in "unlocking" the Zonbu.

I'd like to fit the 2.5" HD. Have the OS run on that but NOT to save my docus etc over the net but locally. Then to keep Zonbu OS but to add my own programs. I'd like it to be an intelligent NAS box with web server and such like added.

Can that be done or do I have to do a complete new distro? If so, is there a way to keep the look and feel of Zonbu (is there a list of all the open source programs they have integrated?) ???

Many questions I know.... Embarassed
