Miscellaneous doc fixes & suggestions

Postby nightmorph on Sun Dec 30, 2007 6:23 pm

The CF from scratch doc references the "Gentoo Universal Install CD", however there is no such CD available for x86, nor has there been for some time. It should instead refer to the Installer LiveCD.

Also in that document, it references the install-public.sh script. However, is it possible that the user will need to edit that script before running? Especially if the user is using a liveCD to install the Zonbu OS to a laptop or other non-CF device. The guide says "sh install-public.sh -o /dev/sdd", but the script itself is hardcoded to look for /dev/sda. My sh isn't all that terrific, so maybe that's not an issue if it takes any /dev/ option. You may still want to include a note that users should change /dev/sdd to their desired installation device. This would be useful for owners of e.g. other StepNote laptops who just want to install the free/developer edition of Zonbu by booting a liveCD.

Finally, for the developer edition doc, it would nice if you could include a brief endnote on expected compilation times for one or two popular packages, like Thunderbird, so that interested users know what to expect of the hardware when they decide they want to emerge their own packages . . . how painful will compiling be on the minibox or the notebook. (Yes, I'm aware the real power developers probably have a cross-distcc farm running.) ;)

Thank you very much for the documentation correction, I have applied it to the page in question.

Regarding install-public.sh, /dev/sda is not hard-coded, rather it is the default if you don't specify -o /dev/someOtherDevice

Which packages would you recommend we use for emerge time illustration?

Thanks for the script info and fixing the doc, Chris!

As far as application emerge times go, how about these possibilities:

small-ish: irssi
medium-ish: audacious (or perhaps a developer library of some kind?)
large-ish: abiword (because really, it just runs faster than OOo, even though it's not a complete office suite. developers might want to sync up, unmerge OOo, and install something that's nicer on the hardware.)
mother-of-all-giganto-economy-sizes: system

Emerging system/world would probably not be the best idea. But seeing the hours/days involved would certainly provide a moment of mirth.

Maybe just show one application that's mostly C code, and another that's mostly C++, to show how the VIA chip will handle 'em. There's not much documentation on the internet at large on how the C7 likes crunching code compilation.

Unmerging OO.org will actually *increase* the space used :) The squashfs will not change and you will add lots of things in the overlay.
