Audio Controller Driver VT82xx

I really like the Zonbu Computer and also Kubuntu.
So I put both together (on a 8 GB compact flash card).

The only Problem:
No Sound. Absolutely nothing. Have googled a lot. No solution.
Any idea to get it working?

You need to upgrade alsa and the kernel to the Gutsy version instead of Fiesty. The driver is not included until 2.6.21 and Fiesty is at 2.6.20. This will install kernel 2.6.22-9generic

Add the following line at the bottom of your /etc/apt/sources.list

Code: Select all: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main restricted universe multiverse

Now run:

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get -y install alsa-base alsa-utils

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get -y install linux linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic

Now comment out the line in the sources (/etc/apt/sources.list) file so you don't get the rest of your updates from gutsy.

Code: Select all: #deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main restricted universe multiverse

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all: sudo reboot

Once rebooted you should have sound. Use alsamixer or other tool to change volume.

FYI, at least one other person on the Ubuntu forums and myself have used this "fix" and it's completely hosed our OS. I highly recommend you do not use the above walk-through until someone figures out what's going on.

Not to say your problems didn't happen, but I've used this fix on 4 different machines now and worked perfectly every time.

Trying to boot from the Gutsy Tribe 4 disc to re-install gives me the same exact error:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

The line before says something about: setup_boot_APIC_clock

I think maybe I have a hardware problem.

Well the fix above only installs the packages for alsa and the kernel from Gutsy repos. The rest of it is Fiesty.

Try installing Fiesty then upgrade the needed packages as described above for audio playback.

That's what I tried first, but the following line:

Code: Select all: sudo apt-get -y install linux linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic

Seems to upgrade the kernel, which breaks my system. Some people have reported success by installing all of the updates for Gutsy, which is why I tried Tribe 4, but something in the 6.22 kernel doesn't like my Zonbox.

So for the record my steps have been:

1) The walk-through above, which resulted in the kernel panic error.

2) Booted to old kernel, then attempted to re-install the -9 kernel and alsa drivers. Same error.

3) Tried the above once more with the -10 kernel. Same thing.

4) Tried full upgrade to Gutsy through Update Manager. This hosed my GRUB and who know's what else.

5) Downloaded and tried to install Gutsy Tribe 4 from CD. Same kernel error.

I believe I've narrowed it down to a kernel problem in the most recent builds of Gutsy. Several people have reported similar kernel panic apci-debug errors on different hardware.

So now my issue is:

1) No audio with older working kernels
2) Newer kernels which supposedly support the latest alsa audio drivers will not install on my machine

I think at this point the only thing for me to do is to wait for an update to the kernel so that I can have audio support on my Zonbu under Ubuntu.

Hrmm, I dunno. I have the default zonbu box with various changes to the bios. Not updated, just changed some settings.

Other than that it's just Fiesty with Gutsy alsa and kernel.

I'd love to help but I really couldn't tell ya what the problem is.
