What other distros have been tried?

Discuss anything related to the Zonbu hardware and its physical accessories: keyboards, mice, monitors, and everything sold in the Zonbu store.

There also exist 1.8" harddisks (Hitachi Travelstar and Toshiba), maybe those are easier to fit inside the Zonbu?

Yes, it seems that the miniPCI port fouls if you fit a 2.5in HDD. Not sure if you can de-solder the port without messing up something else and it would kill any warranty.

So it looks like I can load Kubuntu on my Zonbu and then I should have no trouble getting it to run Freenet, which was my main goal. So far I'm finding that the main start script won't run under the Zonbu OS.

I wonder though, what to do with the on-line storage I'm paying for?

I wouldn't expect the on-line backup to work, that seems to be some fancy work by the Zonbu boys. I wonder if the Public folder could be easily ported to Kubuntu?

Not easily... As you may have guessed, the development effort at Zonbu is 50% customizing the OS for non-computer-savvy users, and 50% working on the Remote Storage.

It's tightly integrated into the OS and there are an incredible number of optimizations to make it work smoothly. For nearly each program running on the platform, we must design some special storage rules to avoid thrashing the network connections. Applications assume that writing 20MB on disk is fast. Uploading 20MB on a DSL connection is not fast...

No surprises there, it seems obvious to me that some difficult work must have been done to make things run as smoothly as they do. I certainly can't expect you to make something that is obviously special purpose to your system generally useful to every system.

Another question then, is there a way to move files to and from the Zonbu Online Storage space and Public space other than through the Zonbu? FTP or SCP from another application for example.

Right now I see one one way to upload one file at a time to the Zonbu Online Storage, the Upload button. The Public space is read only from the web interface.

You can use the Zonbu File Browser, a Windows application, to upload and download files directly from a Windows computer to your private remote storage.
http://zonbu.com/support/manual.htm#fas

Anonymous upload in the Public space is not possible. We want to make it possible and configurable in password protected folders.
See http://bugzilla.zonbu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1200

In order to upload/download your files, you will always have to use a piece of software written by us, because your files must be encrypted/decrypted with an encryption key that is generated from your Zonbu password.

Anyone have any luck getting the windows version of the zonbu file browser working using wine? I'm about to give that a shot and I'll let you know how it works ;)

Strange, before trying with wine I downloaded this on my windows machine and I get an authentication error using the same credentials that I use via my zonbook and the remote storage website....

I'm currently at work and our firewall is pretty tight, does this need any special ports open?

I have installed Mandriva2008Free. I run it from en external HD, after changing the video driver to openchrome (included in distro) everything works fine. Including sound and video. Recording the sound I have not tried yet.

Changing the video driver to openchrome is crutial, the autodetected driver kills the X when playing video...

P.S.
Now I am installing compiz-fusion and KDE4... we shall see the result..

I have gotten Linspire 5.0 and Unbutu CE to boot live.... no problems.... even from an external CD drive.... that way you can still use the CD/DVD drive on the computer.

Mind you I am using the Zonbu laptop and not the desktop.

The Zonbu "Team" seems awfully slow in getting back to me about a replacement for this one that they sent me.... seems the DVD player was fucked up from the get-go.

Thinking of just scrapping the drive that is in it and putting a 120gb drive in it with Unbutu on it.... no hassles with that Linux OS.
