European connector?

Postby mcvd on Tue Aug 14, 2007 4:07 am

My Zonbu arrived yesterday and I found out that it only has a USA connector and not one that can be used in The Netherlands (where I live).
I think this should be mentioned on the ordering page, preferably accompanied by an option where you can choose the desired connector.
Right now, I have to search for some sort of adapter before I can even use the Zonbu. Not a good start...

Yep, same problem here in Denmark - I filed a bug against the hardware asking for either a warning when buying Zonbu that you must get a converter at your local hardware store (bad solution but for now it will do) or that they ship one along with the box since they already know where it's going.

mcvd, you can get a cheap one through bol.com, like the one I have shown here:

I had to saw off the top part before I could use it, but that's not a big deal. I agree on the whole Zonbu not mentioning this part, it's not all that handy. Thankfully, I found out before my Zonbu arrived because I looked at the unboxing video by chance Smile.

I had the same problem in the UK with the USA mains pins.

So I have purchased the following ...

http://www.design-go.com/detail_38762.html

The cost was around 6 pounds including delivery and it took a day to arrive.

The website should give a warning about USA mains plug for now - and explain that the system will automatically accomdate voltage changes for Europe - you just need the plug adapter as above.

The whole incident meant it was a further 3 days in total after opening the Zonbu box before I could switch it on.

We are sorry for the inconvenience. We had many international orders we didn't expect. We will try to add a power adapter as an option in the shopping cart.

Given the multitude of plugs across the world, it seems like the safer option to inform the user. Why oh why can we agree on odd standards like the shape of a cucumber (no kidding there's a EU standard for this) but not for power plugs?

Regardless either option will do great.

I'm in the UK - I was concerned about the power requirements,so I emailed the wondefully helpful zonbu team who asured me I wouldnt needa special power converter, and I was actually expecting I'd need some kind of plug adaptor.

So I went to the local branch ofMaplins, and was advisedthat a shaver adapter plug would do the trick. £1.99 each. They do, too, only thing is that they aren't quite as secure as I'd like, probably because of being designed for either round or blade pins in the one plug. But eminently usable until I can get something better.

I'm mildly surprised zonbu didn't expect a lot of European interest, given we seem to be ahead of the US both on green issues and Linux adoption. I sincerely hope you get a lot more interest over here - this is an excellent product andeserves to do well.

US->UK adapters are ok.
But I have issues with mine as the slightest bump and adapter disconnects. It's probably a case of needing a better adapter. But a UK plug would be great.

Perhaps a power adapter that took a standard power cable as per a laptop or desktop would be terrific. That way we could great a cheap cable from our local shop (or cupboard) and plug it into the power supply.

I also worry that the odd 3 pin socket will be a pain if the power supply goes "pop" in the future. Where else are we likely to be able to get that sort of power supply and socket. Sad

Love the unit though! Zonbu, you have already saved me many hours of support here at home! My none technical housemates are able surf the web (including YouTube) and have not hassled me once about problems... well except for when they bump the plug and the Zonbu turns off. Sad

Lance, thanks for your feedback. We really need to work with our manufacturer to improve the power adapter---we didn't expect so many customers outside the US.

Maybe you can attach the power supply and the plug adapter with adhesive tape... Sorry for suggesting this...
